WAYNE GARDNER

The Interview

wg03

You have been born in Wollongong, Australia, how do you remember your childhood?

I remember a good but hard childhood, I was born in a small town, my father was a truck driver and my mother worked in a coffee shop. We had a little house, everything was difficult, and we had no money so I worked very hard. I promised to myself that I wanted to make a lot of money, have a good life and have a family.

I asked to myself – What I´m going to do? – So I started to run bikes because I was pretty good!

When was the first time you jump in a motorcycle?

I started riding cycles after school when I was 14, professionally at 21 years old.

You won the World Cup in 1987 GP 500, what did you felt on the podium after so much effort?

First of all it´s hard to believe, it´s hard to believe that you are the world best cycle rider, until some week after you don´t really realize that. Nothing really change because you are the same, but is amazing! You represent the country; you have a lot of work and traveling! All this not only happen in one race, you have a big battle to get there, is a long journey!

Its an amazing feeling, you are there, on the podium, spreading the champagne! (smile) thinking –   Is this real?-

Its fantastic but also a bit sad! then you have to thing about the next step, ¡ – What now? – You reach the highest pick so! I am going to stay at the top? Which is very difficult! you have to do it better, maintain your name!

That was your greatest reward or is there any other special race to you?

Yeah, the World Champion is the ultimate goal of course, like your dream. There are a lot of special races and special moments! in Japan, England, Czechoslovakia, Monaco! however and because I am Australian, the Phillip Island race means a lot to me.

In Australia racing was not really famous and since I started, everyone started watching TV, I change the whole sport in Australia and the environment! People cheering, watching the races! it was really, really special to me, it was massive!. Thousands of people cheering my name! that touches my heart. It was a fantastic race, and I won, is the greatest race ever, everybody remembers that race, so for a sporting moment, probably that was the best because was an emotional moment, and amazing race, broadcast around the world!

At that time you race with big guns such as Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey, your bigger competitors, and of course, you, “The Crocodile”, do you think you were different that today´s pilots?

Completely. We were much harder than now, also the bikes were very difficult to ride, very powerful, no electronics at all! now the equipment change a lot! technologies improve, the materials are better! so the character and personalities of the ´80 are unforgettable, the golden era!, also we use to mix with the public, we were more accessible, they could touch us, now they run and they go, it changed a lot, in one way was nice, people got to know us, talk to us! now is different!

How is technology involved now in GP? Are all the changes for good?

Good point, for good means safety, and for that is good, and sport has grown a lot in that direction, and of course is great, however, this is a show, and having less electronics and do the work for yourself does the sport more spectacular! Taste the pilot!, let them control!, let the pilot do the hard work!, now electronics do much things, electronics covert so many things. I would like the sport to be more natural and manual for the pilot, but in the other hand is very good and impressive!

What do you think about Dorna?

I think they have been doing a good job, I don´t agree in all the things they do, but in general they are doing a great job, they are trying to make it more professional!.

What was worst for you, the physical part (training, discipline, diet! ) or the mental part?

I think the traveling part and going straight to perform! yes, the constant training is very hard; you have to be really committed to that! I did it because I had to do it, no because I love it! (smile).

Mentally? I have been very strong because I have a hard background, I built my confidence and my experience, winning, crashing!

You had a brutal accident with Franco Uncini, tough time, you even thought about quitting… how do you remember that moment over the years?

You know! it was traumatic, I was going to give up, Franco was in a coma for about three weeks, I didn´t race, I thought I killed the man! I went to visit him! I was on a wheelchair and he was lying on a still bed, with all the electrics, in coma, I just could cry and cry and cry, it was a horrible moment! I need it to go home, I just was crying! I had really good people on my side, helping me, and when he came out of the coma I feel better, after thinking, I started again. Franco works in Dorna, for the safety traffic, now he is my friend, he understands. I learned that the sport is very dangerous, so I respect even more the sport from that moment. You have to have fear and don´t forget that is extremely dangerous, you have to have fun, enjoy, but always be very careful.

You had a four-wheel racing career too, which are the differences between racing cars and motorcycles?

I did it for step down bit by bit, as a distraction, I love it but my passion where motorcycles, you cant stop just like that and that´s it. I did it for fun, for interest, I am very competitive, it was good to keep me busy and safe, and make me not to go back again! I didn´t expect to make such a big career with cars and I did so, it was great! I travel a lot too! Afterwards, I stop to be with my children all the time.

Now you are doing anything for your kids, Remy and Lucca, how is it going? I think they are brilliant!

Really well! They are amazing! I use to tell them to enjoy the journey and the most important is safety in our game, I use to teach them and give them advice, I am always with them, and I can help them because I did the same so I know about it. They love it!. They are great! But they have to be careful and also passionate.

I always said to my children, who now are starting running: “Enjoy the journey, of course winning is important but is not the most important thing, enjoying yourself, drive save, be smooth, and most of all, enjoy what you are doing, that´s the most important, always be yourself, the reaches on success comes to you when you are enjoying and having a good time”.

Your bike has always been and will be Honda?

Yes, I still have a relationship with Honda.

IMG_0016kakou

What’s more important in racing, man or machine?

In bikes you need the best of everything, best pilot, best bike, I guess 70% is the rider and 30% is the bike, driver is really important, in Formula One is the different!

You have also won four Suzuka 8 Hours races in 1985, 1986, 1991 and 1992, how was that time?

Very cool!!! I have a huge amount of fans in Japan now, there were good times, yeah!.

Do you remember the first autograph you signed or a picture because someone recognized you?

I don´t remember the exact guy, but I was like – What?? Me? You want my autograph? Are you sure? Hahaha I was a bit shocked and embarrassed (smile) I was young… This is really happening? hahaha it was a humbling experience, I got use to that! I love my fans!.

Your favourite pilot?

Valentino, not only because of the titles and because he is great, is because of his personality, is close to the people, he loves what he does, and love his fans, he is great.

What is necessary for being a great pilot like you?

Obviously need talent, commitment and dedication, passion, and you have to be smart and thinking on what you do! is all about heart, having a dream, and knowing what you do.

I always say: When you find the secret to success, you repeat that and correct.

How do you describe yourself?

I think I am a hard worker, a fighter, I don´t like been told that I cant do it! hahah I love challenges and changes, and I am hard heart, but also a soft heart with my children! I laugh a lot, is a medicine, I like to enjoy life and smile.

What was your big after party?

Probably the Grand Prix in Brasil hahaha J! I am not going to say anything!. Hahaha I will explain you fun histories when you turn this off hahaha I have to say its been really fun!.

Your dreamed fairytale?

My kids winning, being champions and not getting hurt, I would like them to be more than me, I thing they can do that, they have the talent. I want my kids enjoying the races and enjoying life. That would be my dreamed fairytale.

What would you say to our readers??

It depends on what is your dream or motivation, but find what your dream is and follow that dream and never give up, because you must do this with commitment and if you are passionate in your dreams you could do anything you want, is not easy, but to be successful you have to commit. Eat, drink, sleep and commitment!.

Many thanks Wayne!! its been a fun and great lunch!!!!
